• The aim of this paper is to understand outline of economic sociology, that has an important role in analyzing the real state of transitional Russia, and to clarify present conditions and problems of Russian economic sociology, through introducing some research results of economic sociological approach to Russian society. Economic sociology is a branch of learning focused on analysis of economic phenomena from a sociological perspective. In particular its analysis makes an in-depth research as to how individual's interests are realized in social relationships. In Russia, in the Stalin era, sociology came into conflict with Marxism economics which was based on historical materialism and it became a victim of persecution. From 1970s onward, however, an increasing interest has been shown in sociology, which triggered establishment of economic sociology. Along with this trend, new worthwhile research results have been made public concerning work attitude among others. In modern Russia, extensive and energetic researches and studies are being made by a variety of public research institutes. In Japan we have seen very few cases of economic sociological approach to Russian society. In recent years, however, they emerge by degrees on the stage. Let me give you some examples to illustrate my point: research into relationship between formation of the middle class and change in social consciousness, characterizing Russian economic culture from the viewpoint of job prestige, and clarifying the current situation and problems of small businesses in Russia through a fact-finding survey to small business operators. I think the effectiveness of economic sociological approach to Russian society can be summed up as follows: 1) such methods of sociological analysis as questionnaires and a face-to-face survey prove to be effective in analyzing transitional Russian society, 2) we can understand changes and continuities of Russian society by comparing modern Russia and USSR from the viewpoint of "embeddedness" of economic activities in social relationships, and 3) examining the role of networking in economic activity and realization of individual's interests in society can be made easy.
