The aim of this paper is to trace the standard of living and economic differentiation in transitional Russia on the basis of our analysis on the household expense survey. Following our studies so far, we consider two points important. First, there are extensive economic activities in Russia which are not covered in official statistics. Secondly, we need to pay attention to economic differentiation in relation to their transition to market economy. In this paper, I make use of the household expense survey with special reference to change before and after the financial crisis in 1998. From the household survey following four points emerged. First, economic differentiation in transitional Russia is relatively wide and the living standard of average Russians is not high. Secondly, the ratio of food supply in kind stands high in disposable income. It plays an important role to diminish economic differentials not only between rich and poor but also between city and country. Thirdly, it is not necessarily pensioners but large families that are poverty stricken. Fourthly, the living standard of Russians, particularly, people in extreme poverty was affected severely by the financial crisis but they are now on a steady way to recovery rather quickly. Concerning possession of housing and consumer durables there is no appreciable gap. Furthermore, in view of the fact that most Russians make money from their side jobs, the household survey does not necessarily represent the actual state of Russian life. Rather it may be safe to assume that their mode of life has a built-in mechanism to guard against any crisis. However, it is also true that the dissolution of social classes is becoming apparent with the formation of the middle class. We have to further analyze the relationship between economic differentiation and dissolution of social classes in our future studies.
