Farms that raise dairy cows besides commercial crops are increasing rapidly in Tokachi District of Hokkaido, the northmost island of Japan. In order to know the efficiency of this type of farming compared to that of non-dairy type, data was collected from 17 dairy and 19 non-dairy farms among those located in the vicinity of Obihiro City. Following is the comparison of efficiency between dairy and non-dairy farms by items showing the economic efficiency.[table] Family labor earnings per hour (w) in the table presented above is calculated by dividing the residual of agricultural income, from which the estimated rent and capital interest are deducted, by total family labor hours. w : Y/n is equal to labor's relative share (nw/Y) and w might be used as a substitute indicator for marginal productivity of family labor. In short, the advantage of dairy farming in this district is thought to be a disguised one and productivity of it is lower than that of non-dairy farming. The disadvantage of this dairy farming still exits even though it is assumed that dairy farming is less affected by cool summers, coming once in four years. In order to make dairy farming more efficient, one of the four elements of K/N, Y/K, Y/B, B/N should be, at least, improved. Since K/N and B/N of dairy farming have been already recognized as larger than those of non-dairy farming, main efforts should be actually made in the improvement of Y/K and Y/B. If we make a little more effort to improve techniques of dairy farming, the efficiency of dairy farming should be raised up as high as that of non-dairy farming.
