A tale of the old art of Navigation. The first edition of this look, which appeared in 1599, was undovbtedly one of fhe most important treatises on navigation published in she Elizabethan era. The Second edition, puflished in 1610. The third printed by Joseph Moxon. 1657 Cornhill London. The fourth in 1780, this edition partly translated into French by Cept Marguet and Epw. Challamel 1918. Wright said in the praefece 1. The sea chart the best meane the mariner hath to knowe the Cousse from place to place, that here of there may arise so grosse error, as may Cause the mariner to miss one, two, yea three whole points of the Compass. 2. It may also be necessarily Jor inferred the distances of places. Who dayly making their charts after the accustomed manner with atright lined rumbes and degrees of latitude, exerie where equall, so they tired herewith in the end, they have holden it for impossible, to make the chart agree in all these with the globe. At last Wright cleared the principle of mercator's chart and made "A table for the true dividing of the meridians in the sea chart." Describe a right line, overthwart the midst of the plaine, which you shall divide into 360 parts and cross the same spuirewise with right lines. Then take the length of half the equinoctiall, (that is, 180 degrees) on the perpendicular or meridian, divide first into three equall parts, and every one of these into other three, and again every one of these into three, and every one of these parts divid into foure, and again divide every one of these into 10 or 100. Then note every part beginning at the equinoctiall, then look what numbers stand over against each degree in the Table and at the same numbers of parts in the perpendiculars, draw right lines equidistant from the equinoctiall, they shall be the parallels.
