This paper attempts to analyze the main character -Anthony Patch- in The Beautiful and Damned. The society in which this character lives is shown to be vulgar, in terms of the way in which people restrict their output yet expect a high return. In contrast Anthony displays a more traditional "quality of understanding too well to blame." The novel has two movements which tend to focus on two separate scenes. In the first of these scenes Anthony is moved by the happiness of love on his honeymoon. He senses at that time a love which is biological yet at the same time transcends its own limitation. This is acquired by the exertion of his imagination. However, in the apathy of luxurious life he fails to emphasize the quality of his imagination. As a result, when Gloria is pregnant, he does not stand in the way of her having an abortion. In the second scene this leads their lives toward a succession of self-indulgent parties, entrapping them in the vulgar society surrounding them.
