It is usually said that the conflict between a satiric observation and determined moralizing, in other words, a skill in the realistic presentation of the behaviour of people and a desire to denounce immorality, is seen in Middleton's early comedies (the so-called city comedies). And many critics have found that Middleton fails to make the opposite elements fuse into a comlc form of the drama and they condemn the playwright by remarking that a kind of artistic confusion comes from Middleton's uncertainty about different parts of his subject matter. In this paper, however, I have tried to follow the process of integrating these conflicting elements in his works, by concentrating on A Mad World, My Masters, one of his early comedies. Indeed, the serious question on human nature which the actions of the subplot offer in this comedy gradually penetrates into the world of the main plot, and the result in A Mad World, My Masters is a splendid but complicated play, where the complex analysis of sin and atonement does fully integrate with the comical drawing of laughter it presents.
