Information on the development of the permanent teeth is indispensable, when we consider the development of dentition and occlusion during the exchanging deciduous teeth for the permanent teeth. The delay of tooth eruption for recent generation is reported in the studies using cross-sectional data. In this study, the formation of the permanent teeth using the panoramic reontogen tomograms (sample A) taken longitudinally for 25 males and 25 females born in 1970's, and the panoramic reontogen tomograms (sample B) taken cross-sectionally for 40 males and 40 females born in 1980's who visited the Orthodontic Clinic of Attached Hospital of Kyushu Dental College were evaluated. The developmental stage of the tooth was evaluated according to the Nolla's method. The developmental scores for sample A, B, and Nolla's standard were compared to determine the differences among three generations. The results were as follows ; 1. There was no significant difference in the developmental stage between right and left teeth for the longitudinal data. 2. The developmental scores were smaller for the males than those for the females. 3. The developmental score for sample B was smaller than for sample A, and those for sample A were smaller than Nolla's standard. 4. Charts of the development of the permanent teeth in Japanese was established for the purpose of clinical application using longitudinal sample A.
