Background : A protective effect of Japanese green tea against cognitive impairment in the elderly was investigated. The potential association between Japanese green tea consumption, cognitive function and total plasma homocystein (They) levels was investigated. Thcy is a known risk factor for dementia and Alzheimer's disease. Methods : A two-year follow up observation of cognitive decline in probable Alzheimer's and normal subjects with respect to their daily intake of polyphenol levels (green tea intake) was conducted. Cognitive function was evaluated by Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE). Findings : A statistically significant positive relationship between the daily intake and cognitive levels was observed. The subject group consuming 0.8g/day or more polyphenol exhibited no change in their Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) score at all. However, the group with an intake of 0.3g/day or below had a significant (p<0.01) decline in their MMSE score. Subjects with cognitive impairment showed higher plasma levels of Thcy. Japanese green tea significantly reduced Thcy levels (r=-0.7, p<0.001) whose reduction might be related to the protective effect of Japanese green tea against cognitive impairment. Interpretation : It was found that normal cognitive subjects had a higher daily intake of Japanese green tea compared to cognitively impaired subjects. From these observations, we concluded that green tea has a potential to prevent against cognitive decline in the elderly and potentially in Alzheimer's disease
