In this paper, I would like to introduce the Effective Reading, the blended teaching material, in which the textbook and the computer program are united. It is the first trial in the field of E-Learning. While introducing the Effective Reading, I would also like to talk about the development circumstances of the material, its feature, an outline of a lesson plan, the effects of the program, the comments of the students who used it at lectures for one year in 2005 and in the first half of 2006, and their reactions, etc. First, what is the blended teaching material? It is using the textbook and a computer program together which are traditionally used separately. It is thought that it is the new form of the teaching materials for performing group study using a textbook and individualized learning using a computer program with sufficient balance in one lesson taking advantage of each material. Why was the blended teaching material born? Seibido, which is the major publisher of the English textbook for college students in Japan, and Real English Broadband, which deals with development and sale of E-learning materials in U.K., have started to develop teaching materials together. Then, as a result of thinking whether group study using a textbook and individualized learning using a computer program can be carried out with sufficient balance, the first form in E-Learning of the blended teaching material has been created.
