A commonly held view about Japan is that disagreement, argument, and expression of contrary opinion are not appreciated. This cultural quality makes it difficult for students to argue, attack or disagree. It is not so in my class. This presentation will demonstrate how debating skill helps university students with critical thinking, in-depth research and analysis of issues, and organization of arguments. The students participate in selection and suggestion of the topics. The popular topics include euthanasia, organ transplant, and child abuse. The presentation will further show what happens when students are responsible for managing and judging each debate. Most students come to this class with either very limited or no knowledge of the debate format. They learn how debate works in the first few sessions. Once everyone gets a chance to go through the whole process, seriousness of debate sets in and winning as a team becomes the goal. The presentation includes discussion on the format of debate, preparation and delivery of speech, and challenges students face during preparation and delivery of speech for debate. Language and vocabulary needs are the major factors for making changes in the standard debate format. An important change is the allocation of extra time to prepare before each speech. The participants of this presentation will receive information on how the standard debate format can be altered to suit language ability of university ESL students. Also, helpful pointers will be suggested to make a debate successful and keep the motivation high. This presentation will show how the whole class takes part from the beginning to the end of debate to make it a success. The goal to win motivates students to work hard toward this objective. Participants will receive information on how to plan and conduct this kind of debate.
