This paper reports a preliminary study on the relation between the Semi-Pseudo-Cleft and Null Object, which was suggested first by Costa and Duarte (2001a). Their analysis predicts languages that allow the Null Object construction have the Semi-Pseudo-Cleft. Costa and Duarte report that this prediction is confirmed by Chinese and Japanese, languages that allow Null Object. We reexamine some of the syntactic properties of the Semi-Pseudo-Clefts and compare the Semi-Pseudo-Cleft sentences in Portuguese with two types of the cleft sentences in Chinese and Japanese respectively. Taking into account the data of Brazilian Portuguese and Caribbean Spanish, we discuss some problems on the relation between the Semi-Pseudo-Cleft and Null Object. We also show that although it is difficult to admit that Chinese and Japanese have the Semi-Pseudo-Cleft sentences, some similarities are found between the Semi-Pseudo-Cleft in Portuguese and some types of cleft sentences in Chinese and Japanese : there seems to be a restriction on focusing upon certain arguments; the copula can be reanalyzed as a focus marker, not as a main verb.
