The antibiotic activity of bamboo vinegar, a by-product from bamboo charcoal made from bamboo was investigated. Bamboo vinegar had antibiotic activities for Esherichia coli, Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Aspergillus niger. It was shown that bamboo vinegar indicated significant inhibition for growth of Bacillus subtilis. Conventional four kinds of bamboo vinegars had also high antibiotic activity for Bacillus subtilis. The antibiotic activity , for microorganisms decreased with dilution of bamboo vinegar. Ten-fold diluted bamboo vinegar inhibited growth of Bacillus subtilis. However, it was not the other microorganisms. Neutralized and 2-fold diluted bamboo vinegar had only antibiotic activity for Bacillus subtilis. The antibiotic activity of bamboo vinegar for Bacillus subtilis corresponded to 10 μg of streptomycin.
