According to Talmy's theory, all the languages in the world, regardless of whether they are spoken or signed, can be divided into different typological groups based on how they encode information about motion events. Many sign languages have been analysed in this framework, but they have not fit into either the existing typological groups. The purpose of this study, therefore, is to find a new typological group into which Japanese Sign Language (JSL) can fit. Finally, in order to understand and explain the variety of not only spoken but also signed languages, we would like to suggest a slightly modified version of Talmy's typology.
