• To clarify the change in the groundwater environment by construction of a subsurface dam on Miyakojima Island on which subsurface dams were completed, the nitrate nitrogen concentration in groundwater was measured at 39 observation wells in 2003 and had been measured at an observation well every month from 1988 to 2001. Results were as follows. 1) The highest concentrations were downstream before completion of subsurface dam, and high concentration zone remained around the dam axis after completion of the subsurface dam. After that, the distribution of nitrate nitrogen concentration in stored water became uniform from the circulation of water by pumping. 2) The concentration decreased gradually. The groundwater quality did not deteriorate by the construction of the subsurface dam. 3) The fluctuation in the nitrate nitrogen concentration decreased after the dam was fully recharged.
