This study examines the production of stress patterns in English and Japanese. A production experiment was conducted to study the durational control of contrastive stress among Americans and Japanese learners of English. Conversely, the durational pattern of Japanese accented words for Japanese speakers is compared to that of Japanese for American learners. The experiment demonstrated that the two groups differed in their use of the acoustic correlate of contrastive stress in their first and second languages. The results indicate that durational control is not so relevant in the production of contrastive stress in the Japanese language, as compared to that in English and also that learners need to acquire a different durational control in the respective second language.
