A Developmental Study of Accent in Japanese:Production and Perception of Accent Patterns

This study examines the production and perception of Japanese word accent patterns by children of 3 to 5 years of age. A production experiment and a perception experiment were conducted to study the acquisition process of word accent in the Japanese language. The results of the study indicated that correct production does not necessarily presuppose correct perception, thus raising a question about the traditional concept; that the acquisition order of perception precedes production. Also, the present study suggested the necessity of analysis of acquisition data according to accent pattern.
