The degenerations of the inferior olive neurons of rats induced by administration of 3-acetyl pyridine, harmaline, and niacinamide were investigated by using Nissl method. The following results were obtained. 1) The degenerated neurons were seen mostly in the inferior olive and in the hypoglossal, ambiguus, facial motor, abducens, trigeminal motor, trochear and oculomotor nuclei. 2) In the inferior olive almost total neurons were degenerated, but in the above-mentioned brain stem motor nuclei some part of neurons was degenerated and healthy-looking neurons survived. 3) The process of the neuronal degenerations by administration of 3-acetyl pyridine was as follows. Central chromatolysis(Type A cell) 3 hours after administration, swelling of the perikariyons and disappearance of the Nissl granules (Type B cell), constriction of the perikariyons and hyperchromatosis of the cytoplasmas (Type C cell)6 hours after administration, and hypochromatosis of the cytoplasmas and hyperchromatosis of the cell nuclei (Type C' cell) happened sequentially.
