The purpose of this paper is to clarify the factors affecting educational aspirations of senior secondary school students' in China. Using data collected from 12 senior secondary high schools in a city of western China (let us call this city "A"), this study examines the effects of family background (parents' educations, family register), the hierarchical status of schools (such as province level key school, city level key school and ordinary school), the academic achievement (students' grades in junior secondary school, their present grades) and two value orientations (toward social status attainment and self-fulfillment) on girls' and boys' educational aspirations. The main findings are as follows : (1) The parents' educations have direct effects on girls : and boys' educational aspirations, but they are very small. The parents' educations also showed indirect influences on girls' and boys' educational aspirations. (2) In comparison with boys, it appears that the hierarchical status of schools have larger effects on girls' educational aspirations. (3) The academic achievements, such as students' grades in junior secondary school and their present grades, have the largest effects on both boys' and girls' educational aspirations. (4) The orientation toward self-fulfillment has significant effects on boys' educational aspirations, but not very strong. On the other hand, the orientation toward social status attainment has not significant effects on eith boys' or girls' educational aspirations. In a word, the findings show that boys' educational aspirations are affected by the academic achievement and the orientation toward self-fulfillment.
