Due to the expansion of employment opportunities since the enforcement of the "Law of Equality for Men and Women", more women are seen entering the workforce. Therefore the equality of the sexes in employment seems to have been achieved in some respects. However, an overwhelming majority of women workers have been driven to long hours and late night work because of the regressive change in the "Law of Accident Compensation for Workers" which became effective simultaneously with the "Law of Equality for Men and Women". 'Karoshi' (death by overwork) is said not to be exceptional to women workers either. Today, the conditions necessary for women's entry into the workforce are many and varied, including the reduction of housework, and the provision of childcare and care of the aged. Also established by law is maternity leave and childcare leave, not to mention the reemployment system which has mainly been adopted by large companies. Tending to the elderly, nursing leave, full provision of day nurseries and after school childcare facilities are also needed. As the proportion of the aged in the population increases, we are asked to reconsider the division of roles for men and women. Because this is deeply rooted in individual awarereness the average person tends to resist the change.
