The study of a literary work is often impeded by problems of different levels-philological and literary. The textual criticism is a most basic among the former ones. Translation is concerned with the latter as well as the former from the very beginning of its work. To choose, for example, the best out of some possible equivalents to the critically decided text, interpretation is prerequisite. "Translation is interpretation "^<(1)> Dante's Divine Comedy which had one and a half centuries as the period of manuscript needs a textual criticism, which never ends. At the same time, it is as a whole an allegory, needing manyleveled literary interpretations which never end either. Its first part 'Inferno' presents problems which are repeatedly disputed, never eventually solved and must be answered almost by betting. Here in this paper are thirty-three of them which are, however, neither purely text-critical nor purely literature-interpretational. Ten Italian texts, and eleven English, four Gerrnan and seven Japanese translations are taken up for the comparison of textual and interpretational variations. The estimations and judgments belong to the author himself.
