Dante's Divine Comedy is the visualization of the minus world where all kinds of men he knew directly or indirectly on the earth are found with their vivid images. The poet was quite unique in that he constructed the completely well-ordered frame of the whole universe and at the same time illustrated a great variety of personalities classified into the system of that universe. A universe consisting of such a container and such contents is his inward world itself. The container is from the innate desire of human spirit to be aware of one's own position in the spatial, temporal and life-and-death dimensions. The contents are mainly many real human individualities or, to speak more concretely, a big collection of varied human emotions. Earthly men are, so to speak, shades (just like the infernal ones) drifting in the air of emotional universe. Inferno, the reality of earthly men, helps its readers to enlarge the scale and variety of their emotions through the co- and after-experiences of many men's lives. To be more sympathetic to every possible human emotion is indeed more humanizing or more universally ethical, but necessarily shadows itself with a nihilistic mood toward the existence of human beings as they are.
