Analysis of a Casual Conversation Using the Francis-Hunston Model

This paper presents an analysis of a conversation using the categories proposed by Gill Francis and Susan Hunston for the system of discourse analysis which they developed in the 1980's at the National University of Singapore. In their system of analysis, Francis and Hunston adapt the Sinclair and Coulthard model (1975) so that it can cover a wide range of discourse types. The results from using the Francis-Hunston analysis on a casual conversation in English are examined and an evaluation of the system is carried out.
