The article deals with problems such as semantic variants of the aspectual meaning of the beginning of either action or state and the actual usage of correlative verbal modifications in Russian and Japanese. Despite the fact that in Japanese linguistics problems of actual usage of these modifications are well elucidated, differences in aspectual semantics of manifestations of the related aspectual meaning according to different forms of representation in Japanese themselves still seem to be unclear. We believe that the semantic classification of the inchoative, ingressive and incessive variants of aspectual meaning of the beginning, based on studies of related problems in Slavic languages proposed here, not only makes clear the restrictions on verbal derivation according to different semantic types of Japanese verbs, but also proposes appropriate ways of translating these verbal modifications into Russian as well as other foreign languages. Moreover, we claim that the above-mentioned semantic classification is probably directly related to the aspectual types of Japanese auxiliary verbs that produce these aspectual forms. In conclusion we point out that in both languages these semantic categories are represented by means of various language tools that have different grades of grammaticalization, and their distribution between these language tools in both languages has very much in common as well.
