The Deep Impact mission accomplished or exceeded all of its primary mission goals. The encounter, impact, and subsequent observations were completed as designed, and the two spacecraft performed their missions in a completely nominal manner. The unprecedented observation campaign-with contributions from ground observatories, space observatories, and the Deep Impact spacecraft themselves-has provided a significant amount of data regarding the behavior and characteristics of comet Tempel 1. There is no reason to believe that Tempel 1 is not typical of the rest of the Jupiter family comets and that the measurements are, therefore, representative of what would be measured at other comets. Analysis is still at a preliminary stage, and there is much future work remaining, including a detailed analysis of the variations in the spectra and of the natural outbursts, and a more detailed study of the comet's geology. The public interest, engagement, and participation in the final encounter and impact event was unprecedented for recent NASA missions, with the number of hits at the Deep Impact web site far exceeding the combined total for the landings of the twin Mars Exploration Rovers (MER) and Saturn orbit insertion of the Cassini spacecraft combined. The challenges to design and conduct this mission were many; however, the entire team of scientist and engineers that worked on Deep Impact was able to meet these challenges in unique ways and return an enormous amount of data to help us further understand cometary bodies.
