Sydney has some exceptionally beautiful natural areas and open spaces situated within the city. Much of the natural heritage that remains in Sydney has a colorful past dating back to the first settlers. One of these areas is the Royal Botanic Gardens, Sydney, which is Australia's oldest scientific institution. The beautiful Royal Botanic Gardens and their adjoining open green space, the Domain, have been visited by countless millions of people since their inauguration way back in 1816. The Sydney Gardens may appear as an oasis of tranquility and beauty in the heart of the city. But you should not be deceived by the superficial calm, for they were created through destruction and conflict - between Europeans and Aborigines; convict chain gangs and their supervisors; gardeners and the four elements. The present beauty was created in spite of suffering, drought, disease and so forth. Here I have focused on the Sydney Gardens including a cool-climate garden, Mount Tomah Botanic Garden along with the forecourt of the Museum of Sydney and tried to explore and understand our place in, and relation to, nature. I have also attempted to interpret the spaces and their layers of history to get the sense of the place and the meeting of cultures.
