Serpentines have been divided into three species, i.e. lizardite, chrysotile, and antigorite. These three species have flat, cylindrical and wave-like layers, respectively. The structural differences are caused by the degree of dimensional fit between the lateral dimensions of tetrahedral and octahedral sheets. Other than the above three main species, the existence of parachrysotile and Povlen-type chrysotile is reported. Povlen-type chrysotile shows anomalous fiber diffraction patterns and latter called polygonal serpentine. Earlier serpentine mineralogy began at 19 century based on optics, macroscopic character and chemistry. Detail crystallographic information was accumulated in 20 century by X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. In this paper serpentine mineralogy will be briefly reviewed.
