As has been already shown, samskara (subconscious force or function which builds up the self) is the key concept to the deeper understanding of Buddhism. Therefore to perform practices based on the understanding of "the mutableness of samskara (Sho-gyo-mu-jo)" has been one of the most essential duties of all the Buddhists to date. It turned out, however, almost impossible for ordinary people to root out samskara completely. This undeniable fact should have discouraged Buddhists from performing their practices or transmitting Buddhism. But actually Buddhism has prevailed among the vast areas of Asia and influenced the way of thinking and living of the Buddhists for a long time. With the key term "anasrava-samskara (samskara free from depravities)," this paper attempts to answer the question why Buddhism is able to survive in spite of its ultimate aim which is almost impossible to attain.
