This paper examines the life and achievements of Mitate Fukuda, a classical scholar and grammarian of the late Edo period. Nariakira Fujitani and his son, Mitsue, founded the Kitanohemon school of Japanese grammar. A distinguished scholar, Mitate was, nontheless, often at theoretical odds with his Kitanohemon colleagues. To prevail in such arguments, Mitate used political tactics to augment his scholarship. Hosting poetry parties and otherwise adroitly advertising his accomplishments, Mitate succeeded in achieving leadership of the Kitanohemon school. Unfortunately, Mitate's political schemes occupied more and more of his time. Though he taught grammatical studies to new disciples and granted diplomas to the successful, Mitate's creative scholarship dwindled. Consequently, the Kitanohemon declined in prestige and popularity.
