This is a study of one of Raymond Carver's short stories, "The Compartment". Myers, a middle-aged man who is the protagonist of this work, is traveling through Italy to France. He is visiting his son, who studies at a university in Strasbourg. His family collapsed eight years ago because of a violent friction between Myers and his son. The story unfolds centering on Myers's feelings while traveling in a first-class compartment. In my opinion, research on the text often fails to grasp Myers's involved feelings toward his son. Therefore the purpose of this paper is to examine the relation between Myers and his son in detail. In order to this, I would like to give careful attention to what his son is called in the text. Also, I would like to consider the effects of free indirect speech.
