In this paper, the English language education at an institute in Fukuoka named Shuyukan was investigated, focusing on its Meiji Era curriculum, textbooks, methodology, teachers and students' development. Founded as a clan school in 1784 in Edo Era, Shuyukan was transformed after Meiji Restoration into an English language school where all subjects were taught in English, and next into a public middle school. Its historical records, including school history books, periodical magazines, memoir, old textbooks conserved in the library, were examined. The findings revealed the detail of English education there a century ago, and offered a better understanding of the history of English education in Japan as well as a good example of efficient language learning.
