Ball-type automatic balancers can effectively reduce the vibration of optical-disk drives due to the imbalance of the disk and hence elongate the life-cycle of optical-disk drives. The traditional ball-type automatic balancer consists of several balls moving along a single or several circular orbits. When the rotational speed of the optical-disk drive is above a critical value, the balls will move to proper positions such that the vibration due to the eccentric mass of the disk can be totally suppressed. In contrast, when the rotational speed is below the critical value, the balls will increase the unbalance vibration. Therefore the optical-disk drive may experience large transient vibrations while the rotational speed increases from zero to the working speed. Moreover, the critical speed depends on the design parameters of the ball-type balancer. A high critical speed not only increases the amplitude of transient vibration, but also limits the working range of the optical-disk drive. In this paper, we propose a new design of automatic balancer, in which the balls are restrained by springs in the radial direction. Numerical results indicate that the new design of automatic balancer can effectively suppress transient vibrations as well as steady-state vibrations.
