Welding is widely used for construction of many structures. It is well known that residual stress is measured on welded joint. Tensile residual stress on the surface degrades fatigue strength. Some methods for reduction of residual stress such as heat treatment and peening are used. In this paper, a new method for reduction of residual stress is proposed. In this method, ultrasonic vibration is used during welding. Two thin plates are butt-welded using ultrasonic vibration during welding. When ultrasonic vibration is used during welding, tensile residual stress is significantly reduced at center of the bead. Next, the effect of duration of ultrasonic vibration on reduction of residual stress is examined. Two thin plates are butt-welded using ultrasonic vibration until temperature of surface of the bead becomes about room temperature. It is found that reduction rate of residual stress increases with the increase of duration of ultrasonic vibration.
