In order to develop linear guides which can cope with high-speed cutting of difficult-to-cut materials, the authors proposed a new hybrid-type linear guide that unites the merits of rolling guides and those of slide guides. The frictional characteristics of a hybrid-type linear guide model have been examined in the sliding velocity range from 1 to 6000mm/min and compared with those of a linear slide guide model. In both models, the sliding or rolling surfaces with a hardness of about 61 HRC were mirror finished by lapping. Results showed that in the hybrid-type linear guide selecting an appropriate clearance between the sliding surfaces may result in a constant and lower friction coefficient over a wide sliding velocity range.
