South Korea, unlike Japan, does not have privately managed gymnastic clubs. Instead, junior gymnasts are fostered in elementary school, junior high school and senior high school gymnastic clubs. However, as the number of such clubs is quite small, children generally are given few opportunities to experience participation in gymnastic events. This present situation within South Korea's gymnast fostering system is seen as one of the main causes of the country's chronic lack of gymnasts. Nevertheless, despite their small numbers, Korean gymnasts have been able to successfully obtain consistently excellent results at recent international contests; a fact largely attributed to Korea's unique Junior Gymnast Fostering System. In a recent study of ours, we were able to fully investigate and analyze the system employed by the South Korean Male Gymnast Enhancement Program. However, we were unable to ascertain the details of the country's Junior Gymnast Fostering System. As such, it was decided to carry out this study to thoroughly investigate the fostering system employed for South Korean junior gymnasts. As a part of this research, interviews were carried out with those involved in the training of junior gymnasts as well as others knowledgeable with the present training system. In addition, visits were made to training facilities, where observations of training exercises were carried out. As a result of the information we were able to collect from our on-site observations and interviews, we were able to gain an understanding of the special characteristics of the South Korean Junior Gymnast Fostering System, which plays an essential role in the support of South Korean male gymnastics. Through our on-site investigations, we have been able to obtain fundamental data which can forthwith be applied to our own country's junior athlete fostering programs.
