In our country the soda manufacturing industry depends on foreign countries for the materials. It is, therefore, desirable to prepare caustic soda from sea water or brine, in which our country is comparatively abundant. As one of the processes satisfying this aim silicofluoride proeess was selected and considered as follows; As the first stage of the process is most important, much consideration was given to the sodiumsilicofluoride formation. 1) Among the impurities, Ca and Mg are not precipitated with sodiumsilicofluoride and SO_4 is precipitated with it as gypsum, so that it must be removed beforehand by preliminary treatment with calcium chloride solution. 2) Reaction mechanism of silicofluoride formation at the first stage was discussed and the amount of hydrochloric acid required and the loss of sodiumfluosilicate related to the concentration of brine at the first stage were calculated from equilibrium of CaCl_2-Na_2SiF_6-H_2O system. 3) Sea water evaporated to about NaCl 100 g/l is expected to be available as a soda material in the silicofluoride process.
