Kobayashi feels the urgent need for the students, especially at university-level, to be equipped with a good general knowledge of current issues. She believes that such knowledge is indispensable in attaining a certain level of TOEIC test score, not to mention necessary in order that students be recognized as efficient social individuals. Kobayashi encourages students to handle reading tasks without the use of a dictionary, instead coming up with the meanings of unknown vocabulary through contextual guessing. She knows that it is made easier if students are encouraged to be interested in both domestic and international social issues. A little general knowledge of such issues can help students to a great extent in understanding and dealing with reading tasks. In this study, Kobayashi presents the effects of supplying students with information initially in Japanese before they approach an English reading task. Thus students have a background of "general knowledge" which aids their guessing of new words from contest and helps them to handle the task quickly and more efficiently, without an excess dependence on dictionaries.
