The precision machinery industry encompasses three fields: optical devices such as watches and cameras, measuring equipment, and other. In the 19th and 20th centuries, inspired by developments in the West, Japan started producing precision machinery such as watches, cameras, measuring devices, and sewing machines. Initially, production technology was quite poor compared to that of the industrialized nations, and the local products-usually little more than copies of overseas products-were generally inferior to the original versions. However, after many twists and turns the domestic precision machinery industry finally developed into its present form. Today, the domestic precision machinery and equipment industry features a number of very large and very well-known watch and camera manufacturers. However, even at the larger firms, flagship products such as watches and cameras account for less than 50% of total turnover. Indeed, the more a corporation dominates within its own industry, the greater its diversification is into a wide range of products in addition to its traditional flagship lines. Furthermore, heavily export-oriented precision machinery manufacturers are more vulnerable to variations in the yen exchange rate. Yen appreciation in particular has caused significant hardship for many manufacturers. This paper examines the performance of various companies in the precision machinery and equipment industry over the last 20 years through an analysis of aspects such as breadth and scope, earning potential, level of corporate activity, financial stability, productivity, and growth.
