It is well known that we are living in an age of internationalization, but what it means in the context of changes in the environment of business administration is not necessarily clear. This article first takes an overall look at the factors of business environment from the standpoint of smaller trading enterprises, in particular smaller retailers, which the paper focuses on, while trying to define the positions of factors of internationalization among them, and then analyzes their effects on the management of retailing business. After attemting consideration from this general point of view, the report assesses the impacts of the progress of internationalization on consumers, who constitute the direct clientele of retailers, and contemplates how smaller retailers should modify or alter their business philosophies, policies and strategies to adapt themselves to these impacts. The chapters that follow specifically analyse particular aspects of smaller retailers' strategies concerning the mode of business, merchandise and sales in this age of internationalization. The final chapter touches on personnel policy and the problems of business diversification in the age of internationalization, which would indirectly support these strategies. These are considered to be the problems which smaller enterprises have to face.
