Recently the financial internationalization of Japan has rapidly proceeded along with its international liberalization. In 1984, 5.55 trillion yen was raised through the direct financial system, such as ordinary and convertible bond, of which 2.97 trillion yen was financed in domestic markets and 2.58 trillion yen in foreign markets. The share of foreign financing amounted to as much as 46.5%, which was fairy comparable to the domestic share of 53.5%. Moreover, its share has increased with the accelerating trend for several years. Benhind the phenomenal increase in the involvement of the Japanese financial sector in the international transactions, which shows up in the recent increase in foreign bonds and loans and the opening-up of bank acceptance note's market, we observe the remarkable growth in the trade of the goods and services (witness the export of $86.7 billion and the import of $57.4 billion with the resultant record-breaking trade surplus of $29.3 billion in the first half of 1985), the everincreasing internationalization of finance and investment behaviors of Japanese firms, and the growth in the net foreign asset position of the Japanese economy. This paper explores current situation of the internationalization process of the Japanese financial system, its major causes and consequences with a special focus on the problems the relations of the domestic financial institutions.
