Interest in the Japanese production system increased rapidly during the 1970s, as a result of two factors. Firstly, despite all of the world's market economies, including Japan, experiencing serious economic stagnation during the early 1970s, only Japan's economy showed a satisfactory performance in moving towards recovery. Secondly, great expectations were generally held for the system, which was regarded as a desirable economic system capable of overcoming the danger to the market economy framework and maintaining sustained high growth. By the early 1990s, however, the general consensus was that the Japanese production system had not only begun to falter, but that was also gradually losing its prospects as a framework for overcoming dangers to the market economy. The Japanese production system, known as the Sanshu no Shinki ("three holy durables"), not only represents a unique labor to capital relationship; it must also be understood as an aggregate that includes not only inter-company cooperation, but cooperation between companies, the government and the financial community. It also important to appreciate its specific, fixed form, and its constant development in response to political, economic and social changes. In the universality of the Japanese production system, in the directionality of changes in the Japanese production system under the influence of economic globalization, and in discussing the influence of the Japanese production system on working citizens, it is important to be aware that the system's structure is undergoing a continual process of change. The Japanese production system that began to falter in the early 1990s is simultaneously in a state of dynamics, moving towards the generation of a new form.
