Thorstein Veblen (1857-1929) is generally known as the founder of the American Institutional School; he was unswerving in his criticism of the then main current of economics. The theoretical weapon employed by Veblen in his critiques was "the concept of the instinct of workmanship." In the context of Veblen's numerous works, "the concept of the instinct of workmanship," after appearing in his paper "The Instinct of Workmanship and the Irksomeness of Labor" (1898) and his first published book, The Theory of the Leisure Class (1899) , was fully developed in The Instinct of Workmanship (1914). The latter book, in particular, should be viewed as representing Veblen's fundamental theory. By examining "The Instinct of Workmanship and the Irksomeness of Labor" and The Instinct of Workmanship, this paper aims to touch not only on the substance of Veblen's unique theory of instincts but also on the general idea of the process of the genesis and growth of institutions. For Veblen, the raison d'etre of "the instinct of workmanship" was that it freed human beings, through productive activity, from the law of natural selection. Furthermore, the functions of the various instincts, primarily the instinct of workmanship, formed institutions, which, in turn, came to impose restrictions, on these same functions. Society is constantly changing. In explaining the various elements of social dynamics, Velben uses such terms as "prevalent habits of thought," "contamination" and "reversion." This shows that Veblen conceives humanity as being the motivating force behind social dynamics. When discussing social sciences, man needs always be placed at the core of our consideration.
