The purpose of this paper is to estimate Japanese production functions, based on our measurements of production functions in the manufacturing industry according to Japanese industrial classifications. In this case, manufacturing includes the entire manufacturing industry, textiles, pulp and paper, chemicals, metal products, general machinery, electrical machinery and transportation equipment. The period measured is from 1970 to 1987. Estimates are taken according to the following method, based on capital stock and amount of labor that appear in production functions. Capital stock is weighted according to the indices of opcerating rate for value-added production. For amount of labor, worker income is used. The results show (1) the Cobb-Douglas production functions are appropriate for each industry, (2) the textiles, pulp and paper, general machinery and transportation equipment industies are decreasing returns to scale, (3) the chemicals, metal products and electrical machinery industries are increasing returns to scale, and (4) the entire manufacturing industry is constant returns to scale.
