Phonemic segmentation has been used since the 1960's to teach dyslexics how to read. The necessity for this technique is understood when the theory of brain hemispherical processing is explained. Phonemic segmentation can be used to teach English as a Foreign Language. The rationale for the use of the method closely parallels its success with dyslexics. The research reported here is based on a study using phonemic segmentation at Komazawa University Tokyo, Japan. A dependent T test was used to analyze the test scores of students who were taught phonemic segmentation as opposed to the test scores of others who were not exposed to the technique. The preliminary success of the method is evidenced in the higher test scores of the first group. A review of literature, including a rationale for the method is included in this paper. Ideas to increase comprehension through phonemic segmentation are outlined. Finally, the statistical analysis is presented to support the method.
