• Japan depends on the import for 96.3% of the consumption natural gas. As for the domestic gas resource it is not sufficient, but it is left good resource potential being still undeveloped. In Japanese Tohoku and Hokkaido districts, the Yufutsu oil and gas field and the Iwaki-oki offshore gas field are located in the fore-arc sedimentary basin along the Pacific Ocean coast, on the other hand a lot of oil and gas fields in Niigata and Akita Prefecture in the back-arc sedimentary basin. These regions are cold in climate. In addition, large energy consumption industries such as paper and pulp industry are located. As for these livelihood and industrial heat source, in many cases is oil, and there are a lot of coal-fired power stations. It is limited, but the trunk pipeline is existing, the depletion gas field being able to utilize as the gas storage facility. In addition, it is possible to discover the new gas field, because gas geological potential is still high. There is much possibility of shifting the energy consumption in these regions, if the gas infrastructure will equip as European gas distribution system.
