In this paper the author will trace what Japanese scholars have done in the field of Ming History during the past 80 years. The two great pioneers in this field were Prof. Wada Sei and Prof. Shimizu Taiji. Prof. Wada was engaged in research on Manchuria and Mongolia during the Ming Period; Prof. Shimizu, on the other hand, devoted himself to the study of the social-economic history of the same period. Not many scholars succeeded these two pioneers. Ming Study during the pre-war period cannot be said to have been productive. It was only in the postwar period that the interest and the numbers of scholars who wanted to work on Ming History increased. In the 1950's they were especially interested in the system of corvee and land-ownership. Then, in the 1970's, the studies were done mostly on the irrigation system. At the same time, during these periods the interest of many turned to the development of thought and culture. In a word, Ming Study in Japan has accelerated in speed and dynamism after the War. Therefore, in this paper, the author will divide the scholars according to the generations they belong to; he will introduce the research of each.
