The questions of the students in three "information technology" classes (two FORTRAN classes and one COBOL class) in Tokyo Woman's Christian University concerning the programming languages for computers were recorded for two years (1982-1983). To obtain useful suggestions for teaching the languages, these questions were summarized and analyzed as follows: 1. The relationship between the number of times a student asked questions and the score of her examination: In the first semester, the more often a student asked questions, the higher her score was. However, no relationship was found in the second semester. 2. The kinds of question: The questions most asked were those concerning input/output statements. The second most common were questions concerning the ordering of the statements. The third most common were questions concerning the name of variables. This was seen in both the FORTRAN classes and the COBOL class. In addition, at the beginning of the second semester of 1985, a questionnaire about the teaching of the programming languages was administrated to the students of the three classes. The results were as follows: Many students (54%) answered that they neither liked nor disliked the lectures on the programming languages. On the other hand, 50% of the students liked the practical exercises. However, 19% of the students disliked the exercises. This was more than the number (percent) of students who disliked the lectures. It seems to us, therefore, that kind assistance is effective for several months for the students who are learning a programming language for the first time. If lessons are conducted by putting an emphasis on the exercises, 50% of the students may be able to understand how to use the programming language. However, students who dislike the exercises are more likely to stop studying, so special help should be offered to them.
