In order to analyze the biological effects of microwaves, we have conducted a series of basic experiments by irradiating Drosophila with microwaves of a household electronic range (2.45GHz and an output power of 550W). First, the detailed gene locus of abnormal wings of D. melanogaster was determined on the flies derived from the 24-hour-pupae which had been irradiated for 10 seconds in the 1985 experiment. The abnormal wings of D. melanogaster show a mode of dominant mutation and resemble existing Bx. Their gene locus is known to be located at 59.3±0.3 in X-chromosome. In the second experiment, standard microwave lengths of 11GHz/200mV were used to irradiate pupae to observe the relationship between the age of pupae and the difference in reduced voltages. It will be observed from the figure 4 that younger pupae absorb a larger amount of electricity than do pupae on the verge of emergence. In the third experiment, we obtained the effects of interval by applying the same amount of microwave to three-day-old pupae whose energy absorption was known to have stabilized. It is suggested that the body recovers its original function when the irradiation is repeated every other day. The morphological abnormal wings were found in 2.3 percent of the emerged flies. Finally, microwaves were applied to larvae of late, third-stage of growth, which may be assumed to be a rudimental culture for adults, at different time intervals to see survival rate. The survival rates were 91 percent for the controls; nearly 0 percent for the 90-second batch and approximately 50 percent for the 60-second batch (Fig. 5). The relationship between microwaves and the biological effects obtained from the study needs to be explored further to determine the existence of mutagenic damage due to microwaves with a somatic mutation detection system using the wing hair spot test. It will also be necessary to quantify accurately the relationship between microwave energy absorption and the area of abnormal wings.
