Measurements were made on the shear rate dependence of the intrinsic viscosity for a fractionated polyacrylamide (M_w=8.19×10^6) in water and in formamide at 25.0℃. Attension was given for the measurements at low shear rates, using a specially designed capillary viscometer that utilizes a photocell-meniscus detection system. The results obtained were compared with Graessley's theory which deals with the effect of entanglement and Fixman's theory which is based on the effect of excluded volume. It was found that the non-Newtonian character of viscosity of dilute polyacrylamide solutions was well expressed by the excluded volume effect.
