The purpose of this essay is to analyze The Wife of Bath's wo that is in mariage. She seems to be a Jezebel and a shrew, seeking mastery over her five husbands. That is not, however, the true state of her married life. As she believed in the gyneco-centric principle of natural law, and sought carnal joy, the paternal element in Christianity and her five husbands regarded her as evil. That was the beginning of her tribulation in mariage. To justify herself, she made three pilgrimages to Jerusalem and also visited other holy places, to ask whether her beliefs were right or not. While travelling on the continent, she found her principles justified by the worship of the Virgin Mary, and the sexually explicit ornaments in churches and cathedrals. But she found her wo renewed after marrying her fifth husband, as she was not young enough to maintain her principles. The Wife of Bath is a woman of the fourteenth century, when the spiritualism of the Middle Ages was being collapsed. In The Wife of Bath's Prologue and Tale, G. Chaucer appears to contrast her natural law with Christian morality.
