中高年令長距離走者の実態および意識調査とその考察について

Recently many of the older generation have been taking up long-distance running. It is estimated that with more than 400 clubs and circles established all over the country, those who practice long-distance running must number two and a half million. Many road running meetings now provide a special event for these older long-distance runners and the participation has been increasing every year. In order to grasp the actual condition of those old or middle-aged long-distance runners and make use of these results for future coaching and the management of long-distance running meetings, a questionnaire was conducted on their training, physical condition, etc., and the following is the summary of its results. 1. The reasons why they take up long-distance running: Most answered that they sought improvement in condition of their health, and their motivation is on the whole by their own will-few took it up because of recommendation by friends or the influence of journalistic propaganda. All the answerers have the resolve to continue running for the future. 2. Training: The average running distance is 5 to 15km on a frequency of up to 20 days a month. The commonest training place is on the road, and quite few are running on tracks. 3. Physical check-ups: The more experienced runners underwent their physical check-ups when they took up running for the first time. Most of the answerers now undergo their physical checkups whether regularly or not. 4. Improvements in physical condition: After taking up long-distance running, most of them have been paying attention to the change of their weight, and about 60% of them are losing weight. In their daily life, they experience less fatigues, enjoy sounder sleep and a reduction in the frequency of catching, cold. So long as they practice rational training free of competitive spirit, they can maintain an improved standard of health.
